The True Blood Characters

TRUEBLOOD is an original HBO series about a vampire civil rights movement that has been met with much resistance by the human race.  Vampires have finally “come out” and are “mainstreaming” into society, but as a resistance grows the vampires need help from a telepath named Sookie to find out where the next major  attack against them may come.

The characters of true blood are almost as diverse as the story lines and plot. Throughout the series we are introduced to vampires, telepaths, weres, shape shifters, and something known as a Maenad every character adding some dynamic new story line to the show.

Sookie Stackhouse

Sookie, the stories main character, is a telepath. A gift she considers a handicap until recent as it has proven useful in saving her life, solving a murder, and protecting her vampire boyfriend Bill and the AVL from the threats of the vampire hating Fellowship of the Sun Church. Sookie is naive in much of her nature as a good southern girl, but she keeps here mind open to others which proves to be a very powerful weapon.

Throughout the series Sookie lives in much pain, both physical and emotion. between having people she loves die nearly every episode, and having her life put in danger multiple times she finds piece from the silence she gets while being around vampires.  The inability to read a vampires mind is like having a day to herself.

Sookie has drank the blood of Bill Compton creating a powerful bond between the too that allows Bill to know when Sookie is in danger. Sookie's main weakness is trust both of her fellow humans, and of the vampires she has grown to love.

Bill Compton

Bill Compton is a vampire who was violently turned during the civil war. After years of vicous behavior Bill has learned to dislike his former self and his maker. Bill is now 174 years old and living in Bon Temps "mainstreaming" among humans as he works to help the AVL ( Amercan Vampire League ) search for their next threat. Bill is romantically involved with Sookie Stackhouse and his soft heart is often standing in the way of the AVL's progress.

Bill possesses great strength, super speed, and is able to glamour (hypnotize humans) using his eyes and his voice. His weaknesses are the same as all vampires, sun, silver, a need for blood, and of course a stake to the heart.

Eric Northman

Eric is the sheriff of the area 5 and the owner of a vampire night club name Fangtasia. Eric is over 1000 years old, is well respected, and feared by many as he is very powerful and loyal to the true law of the vampire. He has strength and speed that make Bill look weak, and he has the ability to fly. Eric is extremely loyal once you have gained his allegiance, but definitely believe he is superior to the human race.

Eric has a profound fascination with Sookie because he does not know what she is, but he finds her telepathic ability to be very helpful to him and is frequently offering her protection and other benefits for her help. Bill Compton does not like the relationship that Eric and Sookie have but is compliant as he has to be with his Sheriff. Eric is very forward about Bill responsibility to him, but is considerate and takes Bill's opinions into consideration.

Tara Thornton

Tara Thornton is a weak person that can't take care of herself. She is unable to hold a job, can't keep her cool, and often doesn't see herself as deserving of a good life.

She has lived a hard life with a drunk for a mother and no real place to call home. After a night of intoxication lead to an arrest and a final blow up fight against her mom Tara finds herself a refugee in Maryann's home where everything seems great on the surface but a much deeper plot is brewing.

Tara is loud, aggressive, and has some drug issues. She is faithful to her friends to a fault and doesn't know who she should trust.

Sam Merlotte

Sam Merlotte is a dog, literally.  He is a shape shifter and can become an animal that he sees before he shifts.  Sam is a true shifter and is able to shift whenever he wills it. He however can not control his ability to shift on a full moon and is at the will of his own body.

Sam is the owner of Merlotte's bar where most of the secondary characters in the story work, and the place where Sookie and Bill met. 

Sam has a torrid past that we don't know much about, but he is always ready to run if necessary, and his relationship with Maryann Forrester leads us to believe that it is something he maybe doing soon.

Maryann Forrester

Maryann is really the mystery of the series, she is a species know as the Maenad and has a strange ability to hypnotized people and create a very sensual environment. She also has the ability to shape shift into a bull like creature that we are lead to believe is extremely dangerous and poisonous when it attacks.

We have yet to be made aware of what Maryann's intention's are in the town of Bon Temps, but she has made herself very close with Tara, and has some sort of past with Sam that seems to make him very uncomfortable.

Marryann is devious, sly, and seems to have a never ending supply of fruit, drugs, and money.

Jason Stackhouse

Jason is your home grown corn fed southern boy.  He doesn't have much in the way of brains, but he can come at you full force with his brawn.  A lifetime of promiscuity, drug use, and the death of a girlfriend have lead Jason to the Fellowship of the sun where he is torn between doing the right thing and doing what people tell him to.  Easily influenced Jason has become part of a plot to destroy the vampire race.

Jason was considered a prime suspect in the Bon Temps murders because he had been sexually linked to 3 or the women who have been killed.  While in prison Jason found god and has been working to become a better person, but is struggling with his attraction to women.
